A blogger once told me: “Writing a review of a Toyota Corolla is like writing a review of vanilla ice cream.
But the so-called Toyota Corolla 2018 – which went on sale in April 2017 – is not a Corolla anymore. It is the Corolla that, for the first time in the Dubai market – and after answering the famous five questions – adopted security as a sales pitch.
We drive for a week the new 2018 Toyota Corolla. The full review is reproduced below:
It is a restyling. It remains the eleventh generation Corolla released in 2014. Therefore, the changes in this update are few, if not remarkable.
The trunk seems sharper, but did not change its measurements or proportions.The trick was achieved by redesigning the grille and the headlights: they are more boring and even the central emblem of Toyota lowered a few millimeters.
It also redesigned the front bumper, with more aggressive appliques around the headlights.

On the side, the radio antenna was replaced by a “shark fin“ on the rear window in all versions, except in the basic version: XLi corolla.
The rims also have new design throughout the range. This SEG version is the only one that fits 17 “, with Pirelli Cinturato P7 215 / 50R17 tires.
In the rear, the changes are even lighter: the optics were reorganized, now with red and white sections in equal parts.
With all this, the 2018 Corolla looks more updated and slightly sporty. Without the XRS version sold in Brazil and without reaching the quasi-galactic aesthetics of the Honda Civic, it has one of the most modern designs in the segment.
It makes the most veteran (VW Vento, Ford Focus and Peugeot 408) look old-fashioned.
In the cockpit the instrument panel was redesigned, with new air outlets. Now it looks more harmonic and all commands seem more integrated.
There are also equipment upgrades, some of which apply only to the SEG version: dual-zone climate control, rain sensor and upholstery in black leather (instead of beige). Nothing revolutionary: solutions that their rivals offered for some time.
The dashboard also improved in almost all versions (except XLi): now comes with a 4.2-inch digital display, with lots of data on power consumption, range and distance traveled.
On the central console there is another novelty: all versions (except the XLi) release a new multimedia screen. Before it was 6.1 and now it is seven inches.
The bad: it is the same – slow and complex – touch screen of the Hilux / SW4. I recently saw a Toyota Auris in Europe with this same multimedia center. And it was not slow at all. It responded quickly and without hesitation.
Obviously this is a problem of the software chosen for our region. At its side, the anachronistic blue digital clock looks old, but responds with the speed of lightning.
Added equipment, but still with some absences: there is no possibility of sliding roof, in any version. In addition, the Corolla is one of the few rivals of Segment C (compact) that still does not offer a hatchback variant.
Beyond that, the Corolla is still a car with a proper driving position and a passenger compartment of reasonable size. The trunk holds a volume of 470 liters.
Here is the great news of the Corolla 2018. With the arrival of this restyling, it went from being one of the cars with the least security equipment of Segment C (compact) to become one of the most complete.
All versions now come standard with seven airbags (two front, two side, two curtain and one knee for the driver), ABS brakes with EBD and Isofix anchors.
In addition, for the first time in U.A.E market, stability control, traction control and slope starting assistance are offered. All series: there is no more or less safe Corolla.
In October 2014, a Corolla of this same generation was subjected to the shock tests of LatinNCAP. With the protocol of crash test of that time and with only three airbags obtained a rating of five stars for adults and three for children.
Toyota should be encouraged to sponsor another crash test with the Corolla 2018. With the ESP as standard, you can re-validate the five stars, but with the new most demanding protocol.
MOTOR and TRANSMISSION
There are no news here. It preserves the well-known twin 1.8 VVT-i engine with 140 horsepower and 173 Nm of torque.
And it maintains a good habit: the automatic box option is available from the most basic equipment level. It is a continuous drive transmission (CVT), with seven pre-programmed gears and Sport mode.
In addition, the XEi Pack and SEG versions have cams at the wheel.
The unit tested had the CVT box. Not the best solution for an automatic box, forget the Sport mode, the cams at the wheel and the seven pre-programmed marches: it is likely that you play a little at first, to see what it is and have fun for a while.
But you will not be slow to discover that the impact on the performance of the car are minimal.
The Corolla CVT accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.8 seconds, reaches a top speed of 198 km / h and consumes an average of 8.9 liters per 100 kilometers.They are fair values and correct for most of your needs.
The brakes are fine. The address also, though not to die of emotion. And there are some aerodynamic noises en route, but only from 120 km / h.
Highlighted mention for the new bi-LED headlights of this version SEG: they are excellent, with a great light power. An extra safety dose. Especially on poorly lit Dubai desert routes.
The dynamic behavior did not change. The rear train received some improvements, with new rubber bushings, but torsion shaft remains somewhat dry when the pavement is not perfect.
It is a car that tilts a little on the corners and is somewhat sensitive to side winds. The good thing is that now you know that it has the extra back-up stability control.
